The US-Israeli attack and Irans retaliation against American bases in the Middle East have disrupted the initial timeframe
A new round of talks between Moscow, Kiev and Washington could be held next week, US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff has said. The meeting was expected to take place in Abu Dhabi in early March but has been postponed after the US and Israel attacked Iran.
Russia and Ukraine have been engaged for months in a US-mediated process that is reported to be approaching the final phase. The sides held two meetings in a trilateral format in Abu Dhabi in January, before talks in Geneva in February. However, the US-Israeli attack andIran's retaliationagainst American bases in the Middle East have disrupted the next planned round in the United Arab Emirates.
"I think the trilateral [negotiations] will be shifted until some time next week," Witkoff told CNBC on Tuesday. "We're feeling we're going to remain positive on that," he said, calling the US-mediated peace process "a purposeful negotiation." He did not provide any details about the exact date or venue.
On Monday, Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky stated on X that the meeting that was planned for this week had been postponed "at the proposal of the American side," which is currently focused on the conflict with Iran.
Moscow said that the trilateral format contacts "should continue," since all sides are "interested" in resolving the conflict. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Tuesday that Moscow is unaware of any specific dates or a place where the next round could be held.
Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed both the Ukraine conflict and the hostilities between the US and Iran in a phone call with Trump on Monday.
Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov described the conversation as "business-like, open and constructive," adding that both leaders expressed their readiness to continue regular contacts. Trump told a press conference in Florida on Monday that he had a "very good call with President Putin."
