The explosion targeted a patrol vehicle near the Savelovsky train station
A police officer was killed and another injured in an explosion near Savelovsky Station in northeastern Moscow early Tuesday morning, authorities have confirmed.
The incident occurred around 12:05am local time, when an unidentified individual approached a police patrol vehicle at Savelovsky Station Square. Shortly thereafter, an unidentified device detonated, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
"According to preliminary data, as a result of the criminal's actions, one officer sustained injuries incompatible with life," the statement read. A second police officer at the scene sustained injuries and has been transported to a medical facility, where he is currently receiving necessary medical care.
The suspect fled the scene immediately following the blast. Law enforcement agencies have launched a large-scale search for the perpetrator. In an official statement, Moscow police confirmed that they are working jointly with other security forces to establish the full circumstances surrounding the explosion.
"To establish his whereabouts, integrated police forces have been deployed, and operational-search activities are being implemented," the press service added.
The area around Savelovsky Station, a major transport hub, was cordoned off following the incident as investigators and bomb technicians combed the scene for evidence. The identity and motive of the attacker remain unknown.
