Beijing did not say if it will participate in the body intended to manage Gaza after the conflict between Israel and Hamas
The US has invited China to become a member of the 'Board of Peace' proposed by President Donald Trump to oversee the post-war governance and reconstruction of Gaza, the Foreign Ministry in Beijing confirmed on Tuesday.
Trump came up with the idea of a new body that he would chair himself late last year following a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The initiative envisages an international council to manage funding, security, and political coordination in Gaza, while working alongside a Palestinian technocratic administration during a transitional period.
According to Washington, the 'Board of Peace' could later be expanded to address other conflicts around the globe. The White House proposed joining dozens of world leaders, reportedly offering three-year memberships and an option to pay $1 billion for a permanent seat.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun confirmed during a briefing on Tuesday that Beijing has received the US invitation.
He did not specify if Beijing will accept it or not, only saying that "cooperation between China and the US benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both."
"Over the past year, China-US relations have experienced ups and downs, but have maintained overall dynamic stability," the spokesman stressed.
Washington and Beijing engaged in a trade war in 2025, which was initiated by the Trump administration and resulted in the two nations slapping hefty tariffs on each other.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been invited to join the 'peace board' through diplomatic channels. "We are studying the details of the proposal. We hope to hold contacts with the US side to clarify all the nuances," he said.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and the leaders of Morocco, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, and Argentina have already accepted the offer from Washington.
French President Emanuel Macron rejected the invite, to which Trump reacted by threatening to impose a 200% tariff on wine and champagne from France. "Well, nobody wants him [Macron], because he is going to be out of office very soon," the US president said.
