BRUSSELS, Belgium: The European Union is preparing to unveil a detailed plan to reduce its reliance on Russian gas, including a proposal to ban new supply deals by the end of this year and terminate existing contracts by the end of 2027, three EU officials told Reuters.
The European Commission published a roadmap outlining steps to eliminate imports of Russian fossil fuels by 2027. According to the officials, the plan includes a pledge to propose legislation in June banning new Russian gas agreements and spot purchases by the end of 2025.
It will also feature a legal commitment to phase out imports of Russian pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas under existing contracts by 2027. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the proposals remain subject to change before publication.
