CHIAPAS STATE, Mexico - Mexicans have been shocked at the treatment dished out to the mayor of a village in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, near the Guatemalan border.
Mayor Jorge Luis Escandn Hernndez was dragged pulling and screaming from his office, tied with rope to a pick-up truck and was dragged through the streets.
Dozens of police officers had to be deployed to stop the attack.
In Mexico it is not uncommon for drug lords and their gangs to turn on and physically intimidate and even kill mayors and other politicians, however in this case it was a group farmers, upset with the mayor for not carrying out his campaign promise of restoring and rejuvenating a local road.
Police have called for reinforcements to the village, Santa Rita, which forms part of Las Margaritas, to counter the violence over the issue. Wednesday's attack was the second on the mayor.
The official told local media he would be pressing charges on the basis of abduction and attempted murder.
The attack was caught on video by bystanders who photographed the whole event
CCTV footage was also recovered showing the mayor with his hands tied to a rope and being dragged by the truck through the streets of the village.
At the time of writing police confirmed that they had arrested 11 suspects.
